Big Brew 2023 – With Free Malt

The American Homebrewer’s Association is promoting their Big Brew brewout day again this year, and ASH is joining in the fun by hosting a club brewout at the Clubhouse. Mark your calendar for Saturday, May 6th, starting at 8am.

This time the official Big Brew recipe is a Pale Ale akin to Serria Nevada’s. The recipe is below, and the AHA writeup and procedure are here.

Free Ingredients?

Yes! Sinagua Malt has donated 2 – 55 lb. bags to ASH and the first 10 people to sign-up here get dibbs on 11 lbs – the amount specified in the official Big Brew recipe! Here is the fine print: The free malt must be used at the ASH Brewout on Big Brew day, May 6th. There will be an option on the registration to indicate that you would like your malt pre-milled and it will be ready for you the morning of the brewout. If you would like to get the malt ahead of time and mill it yourself, you can pick it up at the April 18th General Meeting – assuming that you have registered by then and are one of the first 10 to request it.

More free stuff?! Yes! Through the efforts of your Competitions Director, Tyler, we have secured all the other specified ingredients: cascade hops are being provided by Hopsteiner, and a connection at Northern Brewer is donating 10 packets of LalBrew BRY-97 and 5 lbs of Simpsons Light Crystal malt. We are making this all available to you (the first 10 to register here) with the expectation that you will use it to follow the suggested AHA recipe at the Big Brew brewout at the ASH Clubhouse Saturday, May 6th. You probably already know the old saying – “the club that brews together has more fun and gets better at brewing together.”

You will be notified by Tuesday, May 2nd, by 4 pm if you are not one of the first 10.

Come and set up your brewing rig to brew beer in the clubhouse parking lot. We have space for up to 12 homebrewers with 3 of them having dedicated 120V, 20 AMP circuits for electric systems. The circuits must be reserved and will be available to the first three who register and request them.

If you are planning on participating, please register by filling out this form before 4pm Tuesday, May 2nd, to RSVP and get in line for the free malt and/or reserve one of the 3 electric circuits, if needed (please bring your own extension cords). For the propane brewers, we have 9 spots open with access to electric for pumps and a hose for cleaning/chillers. Remember, we now have a wet room for your post brewing clean-up!

There is a propane fill station located at the Ace Hardware at the front of the property. Ten pound bags of ice are for sale at the ACE as well. You do not have to be brewing a beer to come to this event, we encourage everyone in the homebrew community to join us, in fact we ask that you tell your non-homebrewing friends and family to come by and spectate to see all the different ways to brew beer. Who knows, maybe they will be inspired to join the hobby themselves.
