Why do ASH comps have an Entry Cap?

Why do ASH competitions have an entry cap?

The answer is pretty simple. We simply do not have the manpower necessary to run a larger competition.

Although ASH has over 300 members and Arizona has over 67 judges, only 36 people volunteered during the Fall Classic competition.  If our competitions continue to be under staffed, judging 300 entries over a weekend is the max we can do.

For reference, Fall Classic with just under 300 entries took more than 650 people-hours. Here’s the breakdown:

  • 420 people-hours of judging, completed by about 30 judges during 14 hours on Friday and Saturday.
  • 140 people-hours of stewarding, by about 10 stewards during those 14 hours.
  • 40 people-hours or entry sorting
  • 50+ people-hours on administrative tasks

Could Phoenix be a First-Round NHC Region?

As a five-year goal, I’d love to see Phoenix as a NHC first round region, but we would need to be able to do 750 entries in three days. We cannot do that without your help!

If you want to see us remove competition entry caps and host a first round NHC in the future, volunteer and help staff competitions and join the competition committee.
