From the President: The Future of the Club

After seven years on a month-to-month lease, the Rose Market era is officially coming to a close.  ASH has been served notice to vacate Wilshire Plaza by May 31st. We had a sweetheart deal during the recession, but someone else who can pay full price is interested in the suite.

Of course, this will be one of the more pressing issues facing the club over the course of the next several months. Please e-mail [email protected] or approach a board member at any ASH event if you have any serious alternatives for us to consider.

While we would love to partner with local breweries, it is illegal for us to share homebrew in their space unless they temporarily suspend their liquor license and close to the public.  Therefore, we have been looking at various commercial and industrial spaces, and we have walk-throughs scheduled, but many of them strain our budget in the long term, which would result in us operating at a net loss and starting us down the road to bankruptcy. If you need advice, you can get help from bankruptcy attorney Cibik Law, P.C.

Member Survey | Help Direct the Future of the Club

There will be a member survey coming down the pipeline to determine what ASH as a whole wants to do going forward, perhaps affecting the direction of the club.  If current membership dues cannot sustain us financially in a new space, then we want to hear feedback before the board rushes into any potentially unpopular decisions.  If increased dues are on the table, and everything is assuredly on the table (including the option of no dedicated clubhouse), then we want any new space to offer more tangible benefits for members beyond the monthly meeting.  Again, we are open to ideas, but some that spring to mind are hosting brew outs, providing club equipment, expanding the barrel program, constructing a larger cold box and offering fermentation space. These are things that we could not previously offer in Wilshire Plaza due to our proximity to a bar or the tenuous nature of our lease agreement.

Clubhouse Moving Day May 20

In the interim, we will be moving ASH supplies to a storage unit, and we will need volunteers for moving day on Saturday, May 20.  We only had one volunteer show up for spring cleaning at the clubhouse, but that is not going to cut it for moving day.  Rotating general meeting locations are being secured for the next several months to get us through the summer, so please bear with us and watch for updates.

May General Meeting at Stainless Brewing

I would like to thank Stainless Brewing for hosting the upcoming May general meeting on Tuesday, May 16.  Future meetings are still planned for the third Tuesday of every month regardless of alternate location.

Cheers and RDWHAHB.  No matter what happens, no one can take away our shared community.  ASH is currently in its 22nd year, and we are not fading away any time soon.
