From the President: Scaling Up With the Pros

ASH comp winners brew with local brewmasters

Last week, Arizona Spring Classic homebrew competition winner Justin Rawleigh was working hard (and sweating hard in 30% humidity) at McFate Brewing in Scottsdale to recreate his Northeastmode Pale Ale.  I dropped by to have a chat with him and take some photos of the action. Check out Justin’s ASH member profile.

It is not just Justin that is experiencing life in the big leagues.  Next up, we have Frank Youngblood teaming with Dubina Brewing after winning the May club-only competition with his Kolsch, and Krystal has the results of the July club-only competition ready to go, with the winner heading to Oro Brewing to scale up their recipe.

There were only 11 entries in July, so these small competitions not only count towards HBOY, but they also give great odds for winning a brew day with the pros and learning what they do differently on their systems compared to a homebrewer. These prizes are not just a chance to put your own recipe on tap in a brewery for the whole world to enjoy; they are experiences and memories that you cannot buy or win anywhere else!

Stay tuned because we will have the Arizona Fall Classic homebrew competition GRAND prize to announce at the August general meeting. This month, we will be back at Brewers Connection in Tempe. The meeting starts at 7 p.m., which is the same time that the store closes, so if you would like to make any purchases, please show up a little bit early so they can ring you up. Thanks to Jeffrey Haines for hosting us again as we wander the desert this summer, and thanks to Alexander Phillips with Grand Canyon Brewing for presenting on The Flavor Bomb!  Going forward as we approach 2018, contact the board, and we will do our best to include you, your calibration beer or your preferred topic at an upcoming general meeting.
