Cooking and Ameri-CAN

Ameri-Can is this weekend. Encourage your friends to attend as a portion of event proceeds will benefit the Scottsdale Cultural Council and the Arizona Society of Homebrewers.

Thank you to all who have signed up to volunteer at this weekend’s festival. Our booth will feature a brewing demo, educational materials and T-shirts for sale. Carvin Wilson, Jeremy Mitchell and Jeff Skaggs will be brewing 20 gallons of pale ale during the fest.  The board had hoped we would be able to debut our 21st anniversary canned beer in time for the festival. Unfortunately prickly pears are not in season and would have been too costly to source out of season. SanTan will still be brewing a limited edition Canzilla for us but it will have to wait until the fruit is in season in late July.

The May General Meeting is not to be missed. Chef  Timothy McGovern of The Perch and 55 Chicago will be our presenter. He will be discussing cooking with beer and he will have a tasty sample for us!  I can not wait to see what he comes up with for the ASH Homebrewer of the Year beer dinner. Entries for the first of three mini-competitions for this years Homebrewer of the Year Competition are due at the May meeting. If you would like to learn more about the competition and points system, check out the competition page on the site’s members only competition page.  The winner will get to brew with Mother Bunch Brewing.

The June General Meeting will be hosted by Crescent Crown Distributing located at 1640 W Broadway Rd, Mesa, AZ 85202. Tours will be given of their state-of-the-art distribution facilities. By the June meeting rolls around, we will know if any of the 13 brews advancing to the final round brewed by ASH members have medaled. Good Luck in Baltimore to Chuck Howell, Daniel Sloat, Danielle Schanke, Dennis Mitchell, Jeremy Voeltz, Mark Monday and Mark Peterson.

Last but not least, I would like to give a shout out to the ASH members that Celebrated National Homebrew Day by attending Big Brew Day this past weekend. I’m happy to report ASH brewed 70 gallons at Brewers Connection and had a great turnout!  On May 31st, Bret Waters will be hosting a Homebrew Hangout. On months with 5 Tuesdays we take a break from our usual bar happy hours and drop in on one of our members. Like attending brewouts, this is an excellent opportunity to see other member’s set ups and discuss equipment. This time around, you’ll also get to see ASH’s Most Prolific Brewer in action. See you on May 31st!

The next AHA Brewout will be in November 5th for Learn to Homebrew Day. Established by the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) in 1999, Learn to Homebrew Day’s purpose is to encourage homebrewers to introduce their non-brewer friends and family to the most rewarding hobby, obsession and lifestyle since the beginning of time! You might as well keep that whole November weekend free as the ASH Fall Festival will be on Sunday November 6th. If you like to plan way in advance Spring Fest 2017 has been booked for April 8th.
