Each year ASH holds a competition to crown a member "Homebrewer of the Year". The competition consists of a series of mini style competitions throughout the year. The goal is to encourage members to brew a broad-range of styles. The winner is announced and prizes are given at the annual ASH Holiday Party.

2008 Competition

For 2008, the HBoY competition will focus on three European styles. One each from the British Isles, Germany and Belgium. All are ales to allow for adequate time to brew. Plus one open category for any style.

Categories & Due Dates

  1. BJCP Category 9 - Scottish & Irish Ale. Entries collected and judged. Includes the following sub-categories:
  2. BJCP Category 15 - German Wheat and Rye Beer. Entries collected and judged. Includes the following sub-categories:
  3. BJCP Category 18 - Belgian Strong Ale. Entries collected. Judging pending. Includes the following sub-categories:
  4. Open (any BJCP style category) - Due by November General Meeting.
    • Note: Any sub-category previously entered in the first three rounds cannot be entered again in the open competition. For example, if an Irish Red Ale is entered in competition 1, then any other beer from category 9 could be entered in the open as long as it was not 9D Irish Red Ale.

Rules

  • Competitors may enter any one, but only one, sub-category within the main category (for example, sub-category 9B within main Category 9.) for each round.
  • Competitors must submit two (2) 12-22 oz. bottles of homebrew without any identifying marks for each round. Unused bottles/entries will not be returned.
  • Competitors must enter at least two of the first three rounds in order for their points in Round 4 (Open) to be eligible for HBOY.
  • Co-brewers: Entries made by a team of co-brewers can be submitted. However:
    • Rules 1-3 apply equally to co-brewed entries.
    • Competitors submitting an entry as co-brewers cannot also submit an entry as an individual brewer in the same round of the HBOY competition.
    • Competitors submitting an entry as co-brewers must enter each round of the HBOY competition as the same team of co-brewers. For example:
      • Joe Smith and Frank Jones submit an entry in Round 1 as co-brewers. The team of Joe Smith and Frank Jones must submit each round’s entry together to get credit for entering each round. If Joe Smith and Steve Jackson submit an entry together in Round 2, they are considered a different team, and Joe Smith will not get credit for entering each round as an individual brewer.
    • Points for an entry in a round will be awarded to the team of co-brewers as a whole, not to each individual co-brewer, nor will they be split amongst the individual co-brewers. For example:
      • Joe Smith and Frank Jones submit an entry in Round 1 as co-brewers and receive a score of 40 points. The 40 points will be awarded to the team of Joe Smith and Frank Jones; Joe Smith and Frank Jones do not each get 40 points as individual brewers, nor do they each get 20 points.
    • Entering a round as part of a team of co-brewers does not give an individual brewer credit for entering that round, just that team of co-brewers. For example:
      • Joe Smith and Frank Jones submit an entry in Round 1 as co-brewers. If Joe Smith enters Round 2 as an individual brewer, i.e. the entry was not co-brewed with anyone, then the Round 1 entry submitted by the team of Joe Smith and Frank Jones does not count an as entry for the individual brewer Joe Smith.

Judging

  • Each round will be judged using current BJCP Style Guidelines and score sheets.
  • Sub-categories will be grouped based on the number of entries per sub-category and/or logical grouping by sub-category.
  • Judges will be comprised of current ASH Board members and other ASH members as determined by the Board. Every effort will be made to enlist experienced and unbiased judges from the ASH populace and to have a minimum of 3 judges scoring each sub-category grouping.
  • Judges who also have entries in the round being judged cannot judge the sub-category grouping that contains his/her own entry.

Scoring

  • The average BJCP score (rounded to one decimal place) for each entry will be that competitor’s point total for the round.
  • Each competitor’s point total for each round will be summed over all four rounds to determine each competitor’s final point total for the HBOY competition.
  • The competitor with the highest HBOY point total will be named 2008 ASH Homebrewer of the Year.
  • In the unlikely event of a tie, the tiebreaker will be the highest point total over the first three rounds.
  • The winner of the 2008 ASH Homebrewer of the Year competition will be announced at the annual Holiday Party in December.
