From ASH

Thanks to Tim Dunning of HomeBrew Depot, the club has a used 55-gallon barrel from Stranahan's Whiskey. We are planning to fill it with an American Barleywine brewed by ASH members. We need enough brewers to contribute 60-65 gallons in order to fill the barrel and top off as the beer ages.

The recipe is Jamil Zainasheff's Old Monster from his book Brewing Classic Styles.

How the program works

1. Brewers who wish to contribute to the brotherhood will brew a batch of Barleywine using the same recipe.
2. The brewers will taste each beer to ensure that the quality is to a desired standard and infection free.
3. Sonoran Brewing's Scott Yarosh has graciously accepted an invitation to participate in the program. He will brew the same recipe to make up the balance of the volume, plus a portion to use to top the barrel when necessary.
4. The brewers involved will meet at HomeBrew Depot and fill the cask.
5. The beer will age in the barrel for 9 to 12 months.
6. When the beer is ready, 10 gallons has been promised to Scott. 5 for his personal consumption and another 5 he plans to return to the club. A portion will be given to Homebrew Depot for their time storing the cask and the remaining beer will be returned to each member that contributed in proportion to the amount they put in.

Status

On July 19th the brewers committed to the endeavor met at HomeBrew Depot and filled the cask. There is now 55 gallons of Barleywine in the early stages of aging and conditioning in a Stranahan's Whiskey barrel. There may be a need for some additional Barleywine to be used to top the cask in the event of evaporation.
